Antioxidants are compounds that can  delay or   prevent the oxidation of lipids or other molecules by inhibiting the initiation or propagation of an oxidizing chain reaction. Basically, they help to   prevent cells damage from free radicals reaction that occur both in human body and food   system. In human body, the over production of  these     reactive species due to oxidative stress can cause damage to biomolecules and leads to   cellular injury and death. These unfavorable condition may lead to various chronic diseases such as cancers, cardio and cerebrovascular  diseases. In food systems, antioxidants have been used to prolong the shelf-life of foods rich in  polyunsaturated fatty acids and their derivatives which are readily oxidized by molecular oxygen via lipid peroxidation.

Generally, plants and herbs contain high level of phenolic compounds that contributed as good sources of natural antioxidants from secondary metabolism. Due to the carcinogenic potential of such synthetic antioxidants, natural phenolic alternatives to minimize or retard oxidative deterioration in food and improve the healthrelated functional value of the food. Hence, if you have any samples, intermediate or finished products to be tested for Total Phenolic Content (TPC) as the indication of potential antioxidant source, MIB, R & D wing of MBC is able to provide antioxidant testing services with quantitative results.

The antioxidant activity is mainly due to their redox properties and chemical structure, which can play an important role in neutralizing free radicals. DPPH (2,2diphenyl-1-picrahydrazyl) radical scavenging activity assay is a common and reliable method to evaluate the efficiency of antioxidant activities. This is a necessary test to be conducted in order to confirm on the occurrence of antioxidant activities in test samples. Therefore, it is recommended that the DPPH test to be ran simultaneously with TPC due to the possibility of antioxidant ability retardation from synergism and saturation effects in the samples. MIB, R & D wing of MBC is providing this testing service with quantitative results.
